| Finding a job in the Atlanta Metro Area |
Relocating to a new city is similar to washing your car: The process isn’t particularly pleasant but afterwards there’s a definite feeling of accomplishment. (Of course, the car washing process involves considerably less boxes.) To help ease this arduous but fulfilling relocation process, it’s best to research a potential city before boxes enter the picture. This article is designed as a research tool for physicians considering the move to Atlanta, Georgia.
The bustling city of Atlanta carries a unique combination of history and modern development. It successfully pairs the charm of large brick factories alongside modernly chic shopping districts like the “Midtown Mile,” modeled after Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and Beverly Hill’s Rodeo Drive. Because of its diverse array of appeal, Atlanta is a one the most rapidly growing cities in the United States. In fact, Atlanta is home to the largest growing population of millionaires—boasting many fine dining and shopping districts which cater to such a crowd.
While the promise of top-notch shopping and fine dining might send some doctors scurrying for their suitcase, others are less easily swayed. No worries. For the physician who loves sports there are several professional teams, including the Atlanta Braves, 1995 World Series winners, and the Atlanta Falcons who played (and lost after a valiant effort) the Denver Broncos in the XXXIII Super Bowl. On the college sports level, Atlanta boasts many teams but there are two who garner particular attention. In 1892, the A&M College of Alabama played the University of Georgia in a game recognized as the second intercollegiate football game in the South. This little rivalry continues today and is labeled the “Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.” Make sure to arrive early for the memorable experience of tailgating in the midst of painted fans and hamburgers.
If the idea of spending your weekend at the stadium is not all that appealing, fear not, Atlanta is home to several performing arts venues including the Atlanta Opera, which has earned international praise. For the arts savvy physician, there are also several theatres and museums scattered throughout the old city including the Tony award winning Alliance Theatre and the High Museum of Art. For the music lover, there is everything from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to venues showcasing local rappers.
And let’s not forget about the darling children. Atlanta is home to several interesting and engaging children activities including many Grade A schools and private academies with a reputation for academic excellence. For a weekend family outing, consider visiting Imagine It! Atlanta's Children's Museum, nearby Six Flags over Georgia, the world largest aquarium, or a newly opened Coco-Cola museum. With balmy Southeast weather, getting out of the house and visiting such sites is both enjoyable and memorable.
As a physician relocating to Atlanta, there are multiple outpatient and hospital facilities in the metro area. One such facility, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, is ranked in the top 100 Cardiovascular Hospitals and recently received the J.D. Power Distinguished Hospital for Service Excellence. For doctors who enjoy working with a diverse population, Atlanta will prove most rewarding. Also, the Atlanta International Airport caters to physicians with family overseas or who have a particular flair for travel.
So, if you’re looking for a modern southern city with a touch of culture and history, add Atlanta to your list of prospective destinations.
