Finding a job in the Detroit Metro Area

If you are looking for a northern city with plenty of spunk, flavor, and job opportunities, then you may want to consider Detroit when choosing a place to practice.

Since you’ll be spending the majority of your time at work, let’s talk about job opportunities first.  In addition its reputation as an automotive center, Detroit is also a major health care hub.  And if you’re the type of physician who thrives in a large, bustling hospital environments which treat diverse patient populations, then you’re sure to find a great job match in Detroit.  Within the city limits, there are over a dozen major hospitals including the Detroit Medical Center, Henry Ford Health System, St. John Health System, and the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center.  Now, the Detroit Medical Center is the largest non-governmental employer in the city, with mover than 2,000 beds and 3,000 physician positions.  A Level I trauma center, this medical center consists of several sub specialty facilities including the Children's Hospital of Michigan, Detroit Receiving Hospital and University Health Center, Hutzel Women's Hospital, Harper University Hospital, Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, and the Karmanos Cancer Institute.  Additionally, many Detroit metro suburban areas boast hospitals such as the University of Michigan Medical Center, William Beaumont Hospital, and St. Joseph's.

Now for the fun stuff.  Detroit is much more than a hospital hub.  With a history dating back to the 18th century, the city was called the “Paris of the West” for its culture and architecture.  In the same vein, recent construction along the Detroit River, also known as the Detroit International Riverfront, has helped revive Detroit into a vibrant city with plenty to offer—so much so, in fact, that the Super Bowl XL was held in Detroit.  Preparation for the game resulted in several new buildings and scenic parks, adding to the overall attractiveness of the city.  Detroit is also known for its top-notch casinos and resorts including MGM Grand Detroit, Motor City Casino, and Greektown Casino.

Much like the riverfront, downtown Detroit is also experiencing extensive growth and renovation.  High rise, upscale condominium buildings continue to sprout up across the city to cater to the steady stream of young professionals flooding into Detroit.  Just one mile northeast from the downtown district, the historic Eastern Market is open on Saturdays and draws quite the crowd.  Picture the ultimate farmer’s market offering everything from fresh produce to hot apple cider to handmade earrings and bracelets.  This could be the perfect weekend family outing (and if the little ones get restless, there are plenty of homemade sweets to offer on account of good behavior).

Another great weekend venture could entail taking a trip the Palace of Auburn Hills to watch the NBA’s Detroit Piston’s shoot some hoops (please forgive the obvious attempt of a non-sports person to use sports lingo).  Detroit actually has teams representing all four of the major sport leagues including basketball, baseball, football, and hockey.  So if nachos and stadiums are your idea of a good time, you’ll have a fare amount of options.

Regardless of your personal interests or professional ambitions in the field of medicine, the Detroit metro area is certain to fulfill and satisfy your needs as a practicing physician.
